One day last week, I was eating my lunch and I see a hawk land in our backyard. Oh my gosh, it’s a hawk. Magnificent! I see hawks flying around the preserve behind our home, but never up close, always in the sky or a tree. I jump up to watch and see that Mr. Hawk is munching on his lunch – I think it’s a field mouse.
I run and grab my camera and snap some shots through the window. I didn’t want to open the door to get closer shots, because my dog Lucy really wants outside. How do I know this, you ask? Well Lucy is barking up a frenetic storm inside the house, because she sees Mr. Hawk too. Bark Bark Bark!!! And then Bark Bark Bark! Sorry Lucy. You have to stay inside. I really just want to watch Mr. Hawk, in all his beauty. Can you see him? His coloring is good camouflage against the winter cattails and snow.
And then when Mr. Hawk finishes his noon time snack, he takes flight. Wow!
The simple thing I’m rejoicing in this week is the magnificence of a hawk in my backyard.
